Regulated research refers to scholarly investigations subject to additional rules and ethical guidelines to ensure research integrity, safety, and ethical conduct.

Anyone within the UCSB community engaged in research is expected to acquaint themselves with campus and governmental regulations and policies applicable to their projects. UCSB has consulting and oversight bodies to assist researchers to stay compliant:

  • The Office of Research (OR)'s Research Integrity Department offers general supervision, support, and educational resources concerning adherence to research standards in areas such as Human Subjects, Animal Subjects, Conflict of Interest, Export control, Research Ethics, and Stem Cell Research.
  • The office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is committed to promoting a safe and healthful environment for research following State and Federal regulations. Check their website for more information on a hefty number of programs and services in areas including hazardous waste, controlled substances, and field trip safety.
