Research at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is supported by a robust, campus-wide Research Computing and Data (RCD) ecosystem. This infrastructure is managed through a collaborative model involving the General Research Information Technology (GRIT) group, the Center for Scientific Computing (CSC), Information Technology Services (ITS), the UCSB Library Data, Research, Exploration, Access, Methods (DREAM) Lab, College Information Technology (CIT), and the UCSB Library Research Data Services (RDS). This coordinated approach provides researchers with scalable High-Performance Computing (HPC), petascale data storage, and expert consultation.

Some funding agencies require a description of the computing and data facilities, along with related resources, that support the proposed research. Applicants should outline the scientific environment, institutional infrastructure, and commitments that enable successful project execution, and explain how the proposed work will leverage these resources to strengthen the study.

UCSB researchers may adapt the descriptions outlined in this document for their projects and are encouraged to consult computing facilities staff and research data support personnel to identify and optimize available resources.

Data Center Facilities

UCSB maintains three primary high-density data centers to ensure redundancy, physical security, and high-speed connectivity.

Computing Resources

The RCD environment offers a variety of compute modalities tailored to different research workloads:

  • High-Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Specialized Virtualization
  • Scalable Configurations

Data Storage and Networking

The campus utilizes a high-speed network fabric to facilitate rapid data transfer and integrity:

  • Storage Capacity
  • Connectivity
  • Archival Support

Personnel and Technical Support

A key component of the UCSB RCD facility is the professional staff who bridge the gap between IT and domain science:

  • General Research IT (GRIT) and Center for Scientific Computing (CSC)
  • Software Ecosystem
  • External Integration
  • UCSB Library - Research Data Services and DREAM Lab
