The Center for Responsible Machine Learning reflects UC Santa Barbara's commitment to advancing cutting-edge research in AI, machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, with an emphasis on the societal impacts of these rapidly evolving technologies. We are particularly interested in addressing issues of fairness, bias, privacy, transparency, explainability, and accountability in the context of AI algorithms, and in understanding the wide range of ethical, policy, legal, and energy-efficiency issues associated with machine-learning models.

The UCSB Center for Scientific Computing at CNSI was formed to promote the effective use of High Performance Computing in the research environment. The CSC already provides a broad range of resources for campus researchers, and we are expanding the available hardware with a recent NSF/MRI funded system. Beyond simply providing the computing resources themselves, part of our mission is to provide training in the best use of computing resources; whether they are at UCSB, or beyond. The CSC sponsors classes, tutorials, and individual training in general Unix/Linux, compiling, and optimization of codes. The CSC also actively engages IT staff at research units across campus so that researchers can get help from their local IT staff, who often understand best what they need to do their projects.

The Data Science Consulting Laboratory - DataLab - provides advice on statistical and machine learning methods to researchers (faculty and graduate students) at UCSB. Advice can be given at all stages of an investigation — planning the data collection, choosing the appropriate statistical methods for valid interpretation of results, choosing effective software for calculation and graphical display and figuring out how to do the numerical work on a computer and reporting the final statistical results. The mission of the Earth Research Institute (ERI) is to support research and education in the sciences of our solid, fluid, and living Earth. Our areas of research comprise Natural Hazards, Human Impacts, Earth System Science, and Earth Evolution. ERI strives to build upon the existing research strengths of our founding units while fostering new interdisciplinary collaborations examining how Earth processes affect mankind and how mankind perturbs the Earth. ERI provides member researchers support with proposal development, grant administration, and computing infrastructure and storage.

The DREAM Lab (Data, Research, Exploration, Access, Methods) supports data-intensive research, experimentation and learning with new technologies, and access to advanced computational methods for students, faculty, and staff across the campus.

Research Data Services (RDS) helps UCSB researchers manage and preserve their research data through consultations, long-term engagements, and instructional workshops. Our team offers support across the research data lifecycle, from pre-project planning to post-project archival, connecting researchers with both locally- and externally-provided curation services. Our goal is to ensure that all research data is well-described, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), and sustainably preservable, and that researchers receive scholarly credit for sharing and publishing data.

The Office of Research supports UC Santa Barbara’s status as a top-tier research institution and helps catalyze our rich culture of research, innovation and collaboration. Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) works with faculty to effectively secure extramural funding, from early career fellowships to large center grants. The Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) assists faculty and professional research staff in their efforts to secure and ensure proper stewardship of external funding. Under research integrity, the Office of Research provides broad oversight, resources, and education for compliance issues relating to the conduct of research at UCSB.
