CrashPlan
What is CrashPlan?
CrashPlan is an automatic backup application that is installed on your computer to backup your data. CrashPlan licensing is paid for by the Office of Research and is free to UCSB Researchers (Faculty, Students, Postdocs, and Staff engaged in research) now until May 2029. Most users have been able to get crashplan fully functional with 5-10 minutes of effort.
Why should you use it?
Reliable backups are the best defense against computer loss/damage/theft/ransomware/etc., and the first thing you should be doing to secure your data. Corrupted or lost data can be slightly inconvenient or ruin years of research effort. CrashPlan will continuously protect your data without impacting your workflow, and prevent data loss, such as inadvertent deletion or overwriting of a file. CrashPlan can also help you recover “good versions” of your data if you are the victim of malware or ransomware.
Included features:
- Continuous backup: CrashPlan automatically backs up your data every 15 minutes.
- Secure backup: CrashPlan uses industry-standard encryption to protect your data.
- Cross-platform backup: CrashPlan can back up your data to any device, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- Easy restore: CrashPlan makes restoring your data from the cloud easy.
- Functional limit of the CrashPlan service is between 1 and 2 TB per device.
- Each person/license is entitled to 4 devices.
